Post Malone – Zack And Codeine

In a recent interview, Post Malone found himself in hot water with some in the hip-hop community.  Speaking with Poland’s NewsOnce he stated, ““If you’re looking for lyrics, if you’re looking to cry, if you’re looking to think about life, don’t listen to hip-hop.”  Outside of a few exceptions, though, Post Malone was pretty spot on with his analysis of the artists’ dominating streaming sites these days.  And as the title ‘beerbongs and bentleys’ from Post Malone’s long awaited second album implies, he isn’t looking to make you cry either.

On “Zack and Codeine,” Post plays around with wordplay comparing his lifestyle with that of the characters in the TV show The Suite Life of Zack and Cody.  The song is escapism, anyone who grew up watching that TV show wishes they could have had that life.  Post Malone is just living his version of that life in this song.  In the past, Post has said he isn’t interested in any specific genres and that he listens to all kinds of musicians.  You hear it in this song, with influences ranging from folk to pop music.  There are actual melodies and hooks in “Zack and Codeine,” something that’s missing from a lot of hip hop songs that rely solely on beats to captivate their audiences.

Post Malone will be going on tour this summer in support of ‘beerbongs and bentleys.’  He will be making two stops in Chicago, playing a sold out show at Northerly Island, and then later as a headliner at the Lollapalooza festival.  Check out “Zack and Codeine” below and let me know what you think in the comments!

  1. I’m a country music girl and started listening to it when hip-hop became so popular and I couldn’t stand the music. As I got older, a few of the songs grew on me, but I like to be able to understand what they are saying in the songs and prefer ones with a bit of story. For that reason, I have to agree with what this singer said about the genre.

  2. I actually agree with that statement. Most hip-hop you get on the radio doesn’t really have emotion or well written lyrics, But with any genre, the deeper you go the better stuff you can find.
