John Mayer has always been a chameleon in the music world. He transitions seamlessly between genres and holding his own in all of them. Along the way he has made a broad list of collaborators ranging from Ed Sheeran, to Post Malone, to most notably his work with Dead and Company. Mayer recently finished up a world tour for his latest album ‘The Search for Everything,’ and his focus was seemingly on the upcoming summer Dead and Company shows. Then today, Mayer joined the list of other famous musicians to dropped surprise music on their fans. The trend is growing in this world of social media where there is a reward in making one giant splash to get maximum ears on your songs.
On this latest single “New Light,” Mayer is sings about finding his way out the friend zone. The song pairs the singer with hip hop producer NO I.D. who is most known for his work with Kanye West and Jay-Z. It is another shift in sound for Mayer as the song has a disco feel layered on top of a hip-hop beat. It’s all very eighties, and you can tell that John had fun with this song. Mayer even finds a way to sneak his signature guitar blues style into “New Light.” I am sure the live performances will allow Mayer to play around with that part.
“Cause if you give me just one night
You’re gonna see me in a new light
Yeah, if you give me just one night
To meet you underneath the moonlight”
John Mayer is at the stage of his career where he can explore with different music genres and blends. His online presence has grown over the last couple years, and he doesn’t need to please record company or radio stations to get his music heard. He can take it directly to his fans, and he can experiment with new sounds along the way. His next song could just as easily be a sad folk song, and I don’t think anyone would be surprised. Check out “New Light” below and let me know what you think!

This sounds really nice. It reminds me of Fleetwood Mac or the pop-rock from the 70’s or 80’s.
