Ireland’s Picture This has seen a rise that most bands could only dream about. Formed by childhood friends Ryan Hennessy and Jimmy Rainsford in 2015, the band recorded their first song “Take My Hand” using only an iPhone. The song was posted online and quickly amassed millions of views around the World. Since then they have been signed to a recording deal by Republic Records and have amassed a huge following in Ireland. Picture This recently became the first Irish band to sell out 5 nights at Dublin’s 3Arena, performing in front of 70,000 people over the course of a week.
The band just released their first major label debut entitled MDRN LV which includes the single “Everything or Nothing.” The album sees the band steer into a more pop oriented direction, which could alienate some of it’s fans who were originally drawn in by the Mumford and Sons style sound. The truth is that most bands do evolve from that sound, including Mumford, and I believe Picture This have found a sound that should help them expand their fan base in places outside of the UK.
On “Everything or Nothing” we see Hennessy grappling with a relationship that has ended and whether he is still madly in love with his ex or ready to move on. It was one of the first songs written for the album and it was a simple acoustic tune. As the album came together it was almost left off the because it didn’t match the sound of the other songs. Knowing they had a hit on their hands, the band instead changed the sound of “Everything or Nothing” by adding a drum beat and keyboards to create a pop ballad that could fit the sound of MDRN LV.
“Does it mean everything or nothing?
That I think about you and I cry
Did I just get so used to something
That became engraved in my mind”
The band has just landed in the United States for their first tour of North America. You can check out their website to find out when they will be in your town. Until then, take a listen to “Everything or Nothing” down below and let me know what you think in the comments!
